Out Back at "The Outback"
New bars & restaurants seem to sprout up every season here on the North Fork, but few manage to stand the test of time the way that Greenport’s Chowder Pot Pub has. Quaint, cozy and comfortable, The Chowder Pot Pub offers delicious and affordable food in a true pub atmosphere that harks back to the days before Greenport was tourist Mecca and such eateries were a popular meeting place for friends and family.

The food is simple, featuring hearty portions of seafood, pastas, burgers, and, easily, the best marinated steak on the North Fork. Sit at high back wood booths or elbow to elbow at The Chowder Pot’s warm and inviting bar. Outdoors, dine while enjoying breathtaking views of Greenport Harbor, at the foot of Mitchell Park. On the weekend, the Chowder Pot’s covered “Outback Bar” is the perfect spot for cocktails by the water.

On Thursdays, each summer, put on your favorite tee, climb into your most comfortable jeans and take a stroll down to The Chowder Pot Pub’s famous Thursday Night Barbecue. All-you-can-eat seafood, steaks, ribs, burgers, salads and fresh local corn make for the perfect backyard barbecue experience, for just $22.95. This popular Thursday night ritual also includes three draft beers and, for the very brave, outdoor Karaoke.

The outback barbeque is the perfect place for a family or group of friends to relax on a Thursday night. Highlights of the Greenport.us staff’s recent visit included interesting renditions of Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” “Summer Nights,” from Grease, and Sir Mix a Lot’s “Baby Got Back.” Of course, the Chowder Pot staff was friendly and helpful; while owner Dean Eichorn was on hand to make sure the barbeque ran as smoothly as it has for the past two decades.

Family friendly, affordable and fun, The Chowder Pot is the perfect spot for dinner or drinks in season or off. Don’t be surprised if you can’t get a seat, however, because this fantastic little hole in the wall is a top choice among locals and visitors. Call ahead and make a reservation, especially on the weekends, and ask them to hold their delicious prime rib for you, because they sell out fast!
